Q3 2019: The number of ultra-large data centers in the world increased to 504

According to the latest data from Synergy Research, as of the end of the third quarter of 2019, the number of large data centers operated by Hyperscale Providers increased to 504, three times since the beginning of 2013.

EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and Asia Pacific are the fastest growing, but the US still accounts for nearly 40% of major cloud and Internet data center sites. Other popular areas are China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia, which together account for 32% of the total. In the past four quarters, the new data center has opened in 15 different countries, with the United States, Hong Kong, Switzerland and China adding the most data centers.

Among hyperscale providers, Amazon and Microsoft have opened the most new data centers in the past 12 months, accounting for more than half of the total, while Google and Alibaba are second. Synergy research shows that 70% of hyperscale data centers are located in facilities owned by partners of data center operators or hyperscale providers.

Synergy research is based on an analysis of the data center footprint of 20 major cloud and Internet service companies worldwide, including the largest operators in the areas of SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, search, social networking, e-commerce and gaming. The world's most widely used data centers are leading cloud providers - Amazon, Microsoft, Google and IBM. Their data centers cover at least three of the four regions (North America, Asia Pacific, EMEA, and Latin America), with 60 or more data center sites in each region. Oracle's data center is also widely distributed. The data centers of other companies are mainly concentrated in the United States (Apple, Facebook, Twitter, eBay, Yahoo) or China (Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent).

"The new hyperscale data centers opened in the last four quarters are more than the first four quarters. The main driver is the continued strong growth of cloud services and social networks," said John Dinsdale, principal analyst and research director at Synergy. [This is good news for wholesale data center operators and vendors that provide hardware for these data centers. In addition to the 504 current hyperscale data centers, we see another 151 in the planning or build phase. It shows that there is no end to the data center construction boom."
